If you find a gun at a store for sale priced at the MSRP, you’re getting gouged a fair amount. strat81

A homeowner was at his house in Tacoma, Wash. when he spotted a burglar climbing through a window. After calling 911, the homeowner retrieved a shotgun and fired at the criminal, striking him in the face. The intruder fled the home, but collapsed in a nearby street. When authorities arrived, the criminal was taken to a nearby hospital, where he is expected to survive. In an interview with local media, Mark Fulghum of Tacoma Police was supportive of the homeowner’s actions, stating, “If you’re in fear for your safety or the safety of your family, friends or others, you have the right to protect yourself or protect them.”

Obama to shoot down armed pilots
The Obama administration’s hatred for the Second Amendment has reached new heights. After nearly a decade of safe operation, the White House is looking to reduce the number of pilots who provide an extra layer of security against airborne terror by packing a pistol in the cockpit. This plan shouldn’t fly.

Rumor Control: The Truth About Indiana SB 1
You may have recently read some so-called “news” reports that there is a new law in Indiana that allows homeowners to legally shoot police officers if they believe the officers are unlawfully on their property.  If you think this sounds too crazy to be true, rest assured, you’re right!  NRA-ILA’s Rumor Control has the real story.

NRA-ILA Legal Update- June 2012
Oral Arguments Presented in Illinois Right-to-Carry Case- In perhaps the clearest case in the country addressing the right to bear arms outside the home for self-defense, oral arguments took place June 8 in Chicago, before the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. Shepard v. Madigan involves lead plaintiff Mary Shepard, an Illinois resident and trained gun owner with no criminal record, who is licensed to carry a concealed handgun in both Utah and Florida.  Unfortunately, she has no legal way to do so in Illinois as soon as she steps away from her home or place of business.  The National Rifle Association is funding this case, and our state affiliate, the Illinois State Rifle Association, is a co-plaintiff on behalf of its members who share Mrs. Shepard’s plight.

Ohio: Pro-Gun Reform Legislation Passes House Committee
Today, House Bill 495 passed in the Ohio House State Government and Elections Committee by a party- line vote.  HB 495 now moves to the House floor, where it could be scheduled for a vote as early as tomorrow.

Brady Campaign’s Silence is Golden
As we pointed out last week, the FBI has preliminarily reported a four percent drop in the number of violent crimes from 2010 to 2011, the 18th drop in the last 20 years. Violent crime is now at about a 41-year low.

Microstamp technology is ineffective for law enforcement
Your editorial “Getting down to brass tags” (June 14) left out a few facts that might give your readers a clearer view of the value of adding microstamping technology to pistols as a way of tracing spent shell casings found at crime scenes to a particular handgun. Independent studies by the National Academy of Science, by the University of California at Davis, and by George Krivosta of the American Society of Firearm and Toolmark Examiners concluded the technology is underdeveloped, producing inaccurate results that are easily circumvented, either on purpose or by simple use of the firearm within a few number of rounds fired. Mandates to use this technology come from its sole source inventor who stands to benefit substantially when firearm manufacturers must come to him to learn how to apply microstamping to their products. The cost of $12 per gun comes from advocates of the technology. Firearm manufacturers estimate the cost at around $200 per gun.

Latest Drop in U.S. Murder Rate Will Confound Critics of Self-Defense Laws
Giving a positive character to the old expression, “same old stuff,” this week the FBI preliminarily reported that violent crime has dropped yet again – for the 18th time in the last 20 years. According to the report, the estimated annual number of murders dropped 1.9 percent from 2010 to 2011 which, given the increase in the U.S. population during the year, would translate into a drop of between 2.5-3 percent in the per capita rate of murders.

Anti-Gunners in the New York Assembly Show Persistence with Yesterday’s Passage of Microstamping
Yesterday the New York Assembly passed by an 85 to 60 vote Assembly Bill 1157B, microstamping legislation sponsored by Assemblyman Michelle Schimel (D-16).  The Assembly has passed this ill-conceived legislation during each of the last five legislative sessions, despite evidence that this bill does nothing to prevent or solve violent crime.  Microstamping is easily circumvented and relies on the false premise that crimes are committed with legally-registered firearms.

We briefly attended the CloudForce Conference, put on by SalesForce in San Francisco yesterday. The keynote was scheduled for a head-scratching 2 and a half hours.

Keynote was a soporific bunch of nothingness. Lots of fluffy, self-congratulatory, banal superlatives. While it was clearly an attempt to mimic the Jobs lead Apple product announcements, the result was akin to the pain of watching a 150 minute infomercial targeted at 5 year-olds. It demonstrated a tin-eared lack of respect for the time and intelligence of the audience.

Ironically, one presenter gleefully announced that it was now possible to demonstrate the value of a new SalesForce product to a prospect in 2 and a half minutes, then proceeded to spend 25 minutes explaining it. At that point we ran for the exits.

This pic is a sample of the inanity on stage:

It appears by the description (although the description is pretty sparse) that the back-up sights that they add to the uppers are simply Magpul plastic BUS’s. I actually like the Magpul sights, and don’t have a problem with that – but, you can easily find a set of front-and-back Magpul sights for around $85-$90 online. Yet the difference in cost of the BEAR Elite uppers, for example, between the ones with sights and the ones without is $123.04. So, are the sights they are selling something other than the “regular” polymer Magpul sights? Or are they just hoping people are willing to pay $30-40 for the convenience of getting them already installed on the gun (a process that actually takes about 2 minutes – for a noob)? Just wondering… Adcor

I’m not sure about the weight with the mount and shroud, but the mfg lists it at .85oz. The mfg states that the battery will last for a year if left in the auto-brightness mode. I find the auto-mode to be the best option, but if you like, you can adjust the brightness manually.

When the teen’s girlfriend refused to handle the gun, Torres pulled out the gun’s clip and turned to a butane tank, the Monitor reported.

“He fires one time and shoots himself in the head,” Trevino said, adding that Torres’ family was living in the U.S. illegally.

Bounced off the tank, apparently. Hopefully, the other two learned not to drink and shoot guns.

Gene and the guys at the Calguns Foundation are awesome. In a piece on microstamping, the Paper of making up the Record points out:

In California, legislation signed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2007 has been held up while the attorney general’s office makes sure the technology is unencumbered by patents, as the microstamping law requires. A gun rights group, the Calguns Foundation, went so far as to pay a $555 fee to extend a lapsing patent held by the developer to further delay the law from taking effect.

“It was a lot cheaper to keep the patent in force than to litigate over the issues,” said Gene Hoffman, the chairman of the foundation, adding that he believed the law amounted to a gun ban in California.

Also, it struck me that I read these articles and I actually know and have met the people mentioned. Two, in that article.

Glock Accessories

4/5/2012 1:17:55 PM Well, I will give you a more useful answer than saying “if it isn’t OEM, it’s stupid” or quoting a movie… The factory Melonite coating is very durable and IMHO in the same class as Nickle Boron. I would not have your Glock Accessories coated unless the finish is starting to wear through/off somehow. OTOH, if you do have to get a gun recoated, while melonite is very nice, it is too thick to have added as an aftermarket coating most of the time. Nickle Boron is very thin. The slick nature of NiB is not a huge benefit IMHO because I want oil on my action (even if NiB has shown to function well without for certain periods of time) and that finish causes most lubes to wick off the gun over a period of time; especially when it’s warm out. Not to mention it’s shiny. If it’s just a range gun, I wouldn’t worry about it. But then again, I wouldn’t worry about slide wear either. IMHO, NiB belongs as an option on rifle bolts and bolt carriers, etc. and melonite belongs on slide, receiver and barrel exteriors. I personally would instead replace the barrel for a properly chambered and properly rifled one. That way you can reload if you so choose, or at least sell/recycle your brass. That, or get night glcok sights if you haven’t any. m4nut

Ohio: Right-to-Carry bill goes to state senate
An Ohio bill would let concealed handgun permit holders bypass competency courses to renew their licenses. The measure cleared the House on a 59-28 vote on Wednesday, sending it to the Senate for consideration. The legislation was among a flurry of bills that state lawmakers passed this week ahead of their summer break.

Ohio House Easily Passes Pro-Gun Reform Legislation
Yesterday, the Ohio House of Representatives passed House Bill 495 by a 59 to 28 vote.  This important pro-gun reform legislation now goes to the state Senate for its consideration, where it will soon be assigned to a committee.

No, it is not open season on Indiana police officers
Numerous news outlets are perpetuating grossly irresponsible mischaracterizations of Indiana’s new self defense law, which results from amendments to the state’s Castle Doctrine law approved by the General Assembly last session. “Indiana law that let’s citizens shoot at police” said the San Francisco Chronicle headline. And there was this from Bloomberg News: “NRA backed law spells out when Indianans may open fire on police.” It’s open season on cops! Run for your lives, men in blue! What hysterical nonsense. And it doesn’t help that people such as Tim Downs, president of the Indiana State Fraternal Order of Police, are being quoted with such alarming predictions as, “It just puts a bounty on our heads.” No, it does not. It merely negates The Indiana Supreme Court’s incomprehensible ruling last year that “there is no right to reasonably resist entry by police.”
