Daybreak Daily: Gun advocates sue to stop Maryland’s new gun laws

‘GOOD MORNING WASHINGTON': Among the reports House Republicans continue to insist they won’t approve a spending bill unless it strips funding from President Obama’s signature health care overhaul; Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett will celebrate the grand opening of Montgomery County’s Capital Bikeshare Network; much more, beginning at 4:30 … (more)

Affordable Defense Shotguns: Benelli, Stevens, CZ Compete
Unlike the conflicts with bad guys depicted on television and in the movies, a home owner in a self-defense situation will rarely fire more than one or two shots. In most cases, the owner of a firearm specifically designed to stop the threat of an intruder will never fire even one shot in their home because they will never be put in such a position.

9mm Short-Barrel Choice: We’d Carry 124-Grain Speer Gold Dots
Among the most-popular concealed-carry handguns is the 9mm compact pistol. From the immensely popular mini Glocks to the Sig P290, there are quite a few pistols of this type in service. That’s not hard to understand why: in the same frame size, the 9mm is more powerful than the 380 ACP, and when compared to a similarly sized wheelgun, most 9mms offer more shots than a 38 Special. But many carriers who like the portability of a small 9mm pistol with a lot of shots worry how the 9mm compact’s terminal ballistics compare to the same rounds shot out of a full-size gun.

US Gun Violence Study Uses Math to Compare Policies for Curbing Deaths
What’s the best way to curb gun violence in the U.S.? The gun lobby often calls for better law enforcement. Advocates of gun control typically say it’s all about better background checks and more laws to limit gun ownership. What does science have to say about gun violence? Until recently, not a whole lot. That’s because federal funding for research on firearm violence was largely nonexistent until last January, when President Obama declared firearm deaths a public… [Huffington Post (USA), via GunPolicy.org]

Absentee Voting: Bank Your Vote–Assist on Election Day!
With more states than ever allowing early and absentee voting, it is critical that those pro-gun voters who think there may even be a chance they won’t be able to vote in person on November 6th, ensure they vote via absentee ballot.  By banking your vote prior to November 6th, not only will you avoid potentially long lines, but you will also be freed up to assist with the Election Day activities of pro-gun candidates in your area!

Taxing bullets criminal
For urban politicians, gun control is like the bar in “Cheers” — a place of refuge they can seek out whenever things aren’t going well. Things aren’t going well on the crime front in Chicago, with homicides up 25 percent this year. So what else can our elected leaders do but promise action against guns?

Coalition of Attorneys General Urge Passage of National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity
As we reported last November, the ongoing effort to fully vindicate the fundamental, individual right to carry a concealed handgun for self-defense took a major step forward with House passage of H.R. 822, the “National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act of 2011.”  The bill, sponsored by Reps. Cliff Stearns (R-Fla.) and Heath Shuler (D-N.C.), has 245 cosponsors and was approved in the U.S. House of Representatives by an overwhelming bipartisan vote of 272-154.

Louisiana: District attorney must prove why it still needs gun seized as evidence, federal court says
Orleans Parish District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro’s office and the city must prove why they still need Errol Houston Jr.’s handgun, three years after he last faced a criminal count, a federal appeals court ruled Tuesday. The ruling by the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, scrapping its earlier opinion in the case, could lead to a change in how prosecutors and police view their right to hold on to seized evidence in criminal cases that are dropped but still could be prosecuted later.
